LAUREN REA

Dexter Dalwood, 'Kurt Cobain's Greenhouse' was a made in 2000 from a collage, manipulating space and perspective. From these works, Dalwood creates paintings using the collage as a reference. As a result, these are never actually displayed as resolved works. I took inspiration from this artist through his work process, rather than the style of the finished product. I achieved this through using disregarded magazines, newspapers and other such miscellaneous items such as shoe lases. I feel that my small scene set was very successful due to the composition of the piece, using the juxtaposition of abstract and unidentifiable shapes and forms with everyday surroundings.

The Big Project

Crit Session:
the first week of my project was not going very well and I think this is for several reasons: Firstly, I chose a rather difficult structure which was dependent on accurate drawings (which was made even more challenging as I could not scale up and draw it up first.) Secondly, despite my intention for my proposal sketches to aid me, I found that they hindered my ability to copy and paste various sections. I also attempting to paint the foreground and the background at the same time. So, for the second week, I repainted over the canvas and started over without any sketches or plan...
As a result, my piece primarily uses subtly blended block colours of red, white blue and yellow with a variation of about four different texture. During my crit session it was noted that there was a distinctively architectural element to it, much like a futuristic hallway or room: "spacious, static, enclosed and obscure." There was some debate as to the symbolism of the colours and texture, with many suggesting links to nature or the sky, like looking through a window.
The definition of Utopia is "an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect." It first rose to prominence after Sir Thomas More's book Utopia in 1516 , a work about a fictional island society in the Atlantic Ocean. This concept also holds place in various religions such as Heaven And the Garden of Eden from Christianity, to the Greek Elysian Fields, to the Norse Mythology of Valhalla.
