Phyllida Barlow

The Small Project

The brief for this project was to create a sculpture that would eventually evolve into a collaborative installation with the other people within my work space. This project considers territory defined by an artist and how their  work is limited by the space that they define.

Phyllida Barlow creates sculptural installations using inexpensive, mundane materials such as cardboard, fabric, wood, plaster and cement. This links to the method of the big project and the work process of dexter

delwood, creating a collage of sorts, even if it was three-dimensional. Her work is also interactive with the viewers in many ways as the piece is rather precariously balanced as though it is supposed to fall; often, the audience will be forced to come into close proximity just to move round it. I also found it very inspiring in the materials that she used, particularly in their composition.

To begin my project, I found an old wooden pallet from a skip and dismantled it before I precariously began to balance each piece of the repossessed wood. The real challenge was in the negotiation of my space with everyone else's work. Primarily, I worked with Sashca and Katherine. There was no designated crit as the progression of the work was ever evolving so there was an open dialogue. Due t the nature of my piece, I t often acted as the base and people added elements such as wood, strings, rubber and other such materials. I feel this project was a success in the way that it dominated the space, how each piece intertwined and connected with other pieces....
